Spatial Exploration was started by James Keating in 2014. Initially providing environmental consultancy services in offshore geophysical surveys, James began developing geospatial tools and smart phone applications to automate some of the many tedious processes in everyday compliance monitoring. 

The MMO Range Finder application initially started as an R script that generated tables to aid in binocular range finding at sea. Over time, the tool was developed and expanded into a commercial product with over 1,000 users worldwide, including dozens of professional Marine Mammal Observer across offshore renewables, oil and gas, piling, dredging and UXO programs.
